Certified Peer Support Specialist (part time)

Summary:

The Peer Counselor is responsible for providing direct and indirect peer recovery services and advocacy to individuals in the Bettor Choice Program for Problem Gambling. This position will collaborate with the clinical team to help people in recovery achieve their personal recovery goals by promoting self-determination, personal responsibility, resiliency, and empowerment. Activities include onsite peer support and counseling, peer mentoring and coaching, resource connecting, facilitation of recovery, educational and support groups, and building community support. The Peer Recovery Counselor will perform services within the boundaries and scope of their expertise under the supervision of the Clinical Manager of Gambling Services and within the ethical guidelines of Peer Recovery professionals.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

· Provide individual peer mentoring and coaching, financial recovery counseling and case management to promote recovery from problem gambling.

· Facilitate recovery, educational, support and alumni groups on topics including self-advocacy, wellness, life skills, self-care, goal setting and decision making.

· Collaborate with clients to build sustainable community and social support and resources; engage in community networking as needed. Provide introduction to and assists with adjustment to Gamblers Anonymous/Gam-Anon programs and other community supports.

· Assist clients with the voluntary self-exclusion process.

· Assist in professional training, outreach, and public education services as assigned. This may include appearing at professional conferences, workshops and training for behavioral health agencies and organizations.

· Input all required documentation in Connecticut Renaissance’s EHR accurately and timely.

· Assists Program Manager and clinical staff as directed.

· Demonstrate a continued development of knowledge and understanding about the history, traditions, values, family systems and artistic expression of groups served as well as uses appropriate methodological approaches, skills and techniques that reflect an understanding of culture.

  • Understand and adhere to CTR compliance standards as they appear in the agency's policies/procedures. Adhere to state and federal regulations and standards of accreditation, facility licensure and funding sources.

· Contribute to the design and development of peer support services.

  • Communicate with treatment team on the status of each client’s progress within the program.
  • Participate in all required internal and external meetings, including individual and group supervisions.
  • Complete all required training to enhance knowledge and skill level. Staffing
  • Contribute to meeting or exceeding agency outcomes and performance measures.
  • Adhere to agency ethical codes and the NAADAC National Certified Peer Recovery Support Specialist

· Code of Ethics.

· May perform other duties assigned by supervisor.

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other Characteristics:

Knowledge Of:

· Current practices in Gambling Peer Recovery support, including ethical guidelines, advocacy, mentoring, group facilitation, and active listening.

· Knowledge of: Electronic Healthcare Record systems, general office software, particularly Microsoft Office Suite

Ability To:

· Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.

· Manage priorities effectively to meet deadlines and demonstrate multi-tasking skills.

· Employ effective organizational skills to meet goals; and

· Work independently and as part of a team.

Education and Experience:

· Experience working with and/or working knowledge of clients in recovery from gambling disorders.

· Certification in Peer Recovery is supported by a nationally recognized or approved entity preferred.

· Minimum of 2 years’ working experience as a Peer Counselor.

· Minimum of an associate’s degree. Degree in a Human Services field preferred.

Other:

· Must be dependable and reliable; detailed oriented; and able to interface easily with clients, staff, and referral sources.

  • Must be able to operate a motor vehicle.
  • Position requires climbing stairs and the ability to lift 20 lbs. or more.
  • May need to travel to other CTR locations or to professional meetings at various Connecticut locations.

· Must successfully complete the introductory probationary employment period.

· Must have a valid CT driver’s license.
